These panels are the foundational materials of the global furniture, construction, and interior finishing industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global wood-based composite panel production reached a record <strong>375.3 million m\u00b3 in 2022<\/strong>, with particleboard, MDF, and OSB accounting for over 66% of total production (<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11499423\/\">NCBI, 2024<\/a>). Europe and Asia together produce over 70% of global PB and MDF, making wood-based panel production one of the most important segments of the global wood products industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern wood-based panel plants are a complex, highly automated industrial systems. It operates continuously, typically in three shifts, and integrates dozens of specialised machines and systems across a process chain that can span several hundred metres from raw material intake to finished panel output. Understanding the structure of these plants, and how each section contributes to overall plant performance, is essential for engineers, managers, and investors in this industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The main production stages in a wood-based panel plant<\/strong>s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although specific configurations vary by panel type (PB, MDF, OSB), every wood-based panel plants follows the same fundamental process logic: raw material preparation \u2192 particle production \u2192 drying \u2192 cleaning and classification \u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmc-texpan.com\/en\/2026\/06\/05\/glue-blending-systems\/\">glue blending<\/a> \u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmc-texpan.com\/en\/2026\/06\/29\/mat-forming-systems\/\">mat forming<\/a> \u2192 pressing \u2192 board finishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Raw material arrives by truck or rail. Logs are debarked; large pieces are chipped in disc or drum chippers. The resulting chips are screened to remove fines and oversized material, then conveyed to wet storage silos. From there, chips feed the knife ring flaker (for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmc-texpan.com\/en\/2026\/06\/15\/particleboard-manufacturing-process\/\">particleboard<\/a>) or defibrator (for MDF), which reduces them to the final particle geometry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After particle production, material flows through drying (reducing moisture to 2\u20138%), screening (separating surface and core fractions), cleaning (removing heavy contaminants), and storage in dosing bins before entering the glue blending stage. The press can only operate as well as the quality of the mat it receives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sorting and cleaning section determines the purity of the particle flow. Contaminants that reach the press, metal objects, stones, large bark fragments, can cause catastrophic damage to press belts and platen surfaces, resulting in production stoppages lasting days.
